1] Paying no heed to the visitor’s perspective

Most of the web designers are obsessed about looks. Again, the look factor won’t lead to raised eyebrows, not until the designer chooses to overlook the visitor’s maneuverability and convenience. One needs to underscore all kinds of information which the visitors are likely to browse. Therefore it becomes very crucial to do in-depth research on your visitor’s needs and expectations prior to making the web designs.

2] Owning Cluttered and Coloured Sites

Navigation of the website is akin to streets and highways. Some streets and highways are effortlessly maneuverable, thanks to the signage and smooth, well-kept roadways, on the other hand, some roads have several detours and that makes navigation a lot difficult. Likewise, some sites look too cluttered, or are infested with rainbow of colours. What happens in case of such sites is that viewers get confused, spend too much time searching for the content. In case of coloured pages, clarity of the text becomes a major issue.

However, be mindful of the fact that all important pages should be one click away, while ideally no page should be three clicks away.

3] Huge Images

Large images take too much time to load. And this makes the whole webpage loading process slow. This might annoy the visitor as they prefer to look at pages that upload faster. Likewise, uploading video and other large media files delays the uploading process.

4] Hard to comprehend texts

Though the importance of simple, search engine friendly text has been harped upon time and again, people resort to having heavy text that is not at all user friendly. Moreover, informal text is not easy to comprehend and may discourage the visitor from further perusing the site. In case you are intending to have a background image, do remember that having detailed images at the back will cause difficulties for the reader.

5] Excessive text or Very little text

Both excessive text and very little text could work against you. If you give keep beating around the bush, then you might probably put off the reader. However, the most common refrain is that the sites don’t carry enough text. So naturally, visitors don’t find adequate information on the products, moreover it is considered bad for SEO purposes.

6] Discounting the text content

Too many are only concerned with the design aspect of the website. They give a damn to the text part. But this could spell their doom. Visitors come to site seeking information, and if that’s not properly laid out then it defeats the very purpose of rolling out a website. It’s amazing to find so many sites poor on the content part.

7] Overuse of flash

Flash no doubt looks good, but it is more likely to turn away the visitors. If the visitors have to wait for a graphic to open they might as well leave the site. The bottom-line is that flash is of no use to the visitors. It is only a platform for designers to showcase their talent.

8] Over emphasis or under emphasis on SEO

Are you designing the site purely for SEO purposes? Does this mean visitors won’t stand to gain anything from the site?  Don’t you think text ought to have a fine balance, wherein both the visitors and search engines can benefit? In fact if you appear high on search engines, but if the visitors don’t stay on the site, then it will never get any business for you. On other hand, if you come up with an impressive site, but fail to give due importance to SEO, then probably your site will never be found by the customers.

9] Too many ads

No doubts, ads generate extra income, but inundating your site with ads might not be good for business. Business sites should always be kept free from ads. Should you keep them, see to it that they don’t take over. The main drawback in keeping ads is that visitors will get drawn to these ads and this would take them away from our pages.

10] Lack of uniformity

Some web designers do not give due weight age to the consistency aspect, and design each page independently. However, this is not right. The content of the site may differ throughout; however when it comes to look and feel, consistency is of paramount importance.
